Functional Resume: One of the least accepted layouts, as it provokes the reader to ask "what’s this candidate hiding?" A functional format primarily lists the candidate’s ambitions, goals, skills comprehension or to recap a business’ expectations, but doesn’t list (or only slightly) actual work experience. This style is commonly used by: -
High school or college grads with limited or no work history
-
Return-to-work homemakers with limited or no work history
-
Individuals entering into the workforce for the first time
-
Individuals with long stints of unemployment
This style can attempt to camouflage lengthy employment gaps, caused by illness, or something else less favorable like incarceration. The layout should be a job seekers last choice since it throws up a number of red flags with employers. A person can attempt to offset these types of flaws, but can never really “hide them.”
